01:39 pm - Internet for Language Learning
Some people believe that Japanese students have very little chance to practice their English with native speakers. However, I believe that the internet gives Japanese students a great way to use and learn English. Using the internet, students can practice their English while meeting people from many different countries. Almost 900 million people from more than 200 countries use the internet everyday, so it is possible to communicate with them if a student knows how. One way is to use Livejournal to share thoughts and opinions with others while using the Friends feature to find people with similar interests. Another way is to use Flickr to share photos and talk to people about the photos they have taken. Also, students can find Keypals with whom they can exchange emails and get to know one another. Using the internet in these ways will expose Japanese students to a wide variety of English as it is actually used, as opposed to 'textbook' English to which so many are accustomed. This is why using the internet to use the language they have been studying for so many years is a good idea.Jun. 14th, 2005
01:36 pm - The Yellow House
I really think that Van Gogh is a very talented artist. In my mind, he is one of the greatest painters who has ever lived. His use of color is incredible and the colors he uses make me feel like I am in a dream. His paintings also have a very distinct texture. His brushstrokes give the paintings an amazing quality of emotion.Jun. 7th, 2005
01:24 pm - Lifestyles Destroy Environment
The environment is being destroyed by modern lifestyles. For example, many of our rivers are contaminating with chemicals from factories and farm fields. Also, the air we breathe is smoggy from the exhaust of petroleum-based vehicles. Furthermore, trees are being cut down all over the world to fuel our high demand for wooden houses, paper, and chopsticks. You can even find trash lying on the ground in parks, rivers, streets, and natural areas. Worst of all, various species of plants and animals are dying out. As you can see, our modern lifestyles are quickly ruining the beautiful world around us. We can prevent this from happening by changing our lifestyles immediately.May. 31st, 2005
01:23 pm - Iris Garden Path
I really love the way Japanese people create gardens. I especially like the way that they use footpaths to help people stop and see the surroundings. This footpath is located in the Kyoto Botanical Gardens and is a perfect example of Japanese style. I think it is very beautiful. Don't you?May. 24th, 2005
11:45 am - Hiking
I think hiking is a healthy activity that many people should consider doing. First, hiking is great excercise. People who hike develop strong legs and lower backs, along with the ability to breath deeply and keep their balance. Also, being up in the mountains allows people to breath fresh air from all the trees and plants, which is good for the brain and the body's energy levels. Furthermore, hiking allows people to get away from the city and spend time in a natural environment, which is also good for their health. Doing so also lets people get more in touch with nature and learn to appreciate and respect it. People having better relationships with nature through hiking is something that the whole world could use, especially since there are so many environmental problems created by people who don't respect nature. Finally, hiking is really a lot of fun, as you can see in these pictures. So as you can see, through increasing health and fitness, and by allowing a closer relationship with nature to develop, hiking is a very enjoyable and beneficial activity.

02:40 pm - Parenting
I think one of the most important activities on the planet is parenting. Once I became a parent two years ago, I quickly realized just how challenging being a good parent can be. It is something that requires constant attention and reflection. More importantly, it requires a lot of patience. To improve, it is a good idea to share parenting ideas and practices with other people who are parents themselves. Here's a website called Parenting.org with some good resources for parents.

11:38 am - A Wonderful Country
Guatemala, which is located in Central America, is one of my favorite places in the world. I first went there when I was 19 years old and stayed for three months. Guatemala is an excellent place to travel because the culture is fascinating and landscape is varied. In Guatemala there are pyramids, volcanos, beaches, jungles, lakes, and historical colonial cities. A good percentage of the Guatemalan people are indigenous, so you can hear different languages and experience different cultural practices. There are also many language schools where you can learn to speak Spanish. Has anyone else ever been to Guatemala? If not, I recommend that you go there to visit.

01:46 pm - Bear Encounter
I was hiking up Hiei-zan at dawn earlier this week when suddenly I heard a several loud growls and a snort. It was a black bear! I thought I was going to be attacked. Luckily the bear must of been as scared of me as I was of it. I got out of there very quickly. I've never heard of there being bears on Hiei-zan, as bear territory is in the far north of Kyoto prefecture. The food supply of the bears must be very low this year, thus all the attacks and sightings in the news this fall. I wonder if I can buy any pepper spray here in Japan?

06:22 am - 2004 U.S. Presidential Election
Well, I received my absentee ballot, just voted for president, and am sending the form off in the mail today. I was sad to see that in my state (Missouri) the only political parties listed on the ballot fell to the right of the economic-political scale, which means that they benefit the wealthy and status quo. There was not a single left party anywhere to be seen on the ballot; no Greens, no Labor, no Communists, no Socialists, not even a leftist Independent. What kind of choices does that give a voter? What is going on here?
Down with George W. Bush!
